More than 450 people have participated in the different environmental awareness activities that the Department of Environment of Castalla organized to commemorate Tree Day, in a double day between Friday, January 31 and Saturday, February 1. Between the two days, participants planted more than 800 specimens of trees and shrubs. Specifically a plantation of carrasca, aladierno, rosemary, lentisk, hawthorn or trumpet. The activities on Friday were aimed at school children and those on Saturday were open to the entire interested population.

On Friday morning, 140 students in fifth and sixth grade at Rico Sapena School planted trees in the Castalla Municipal Park. First, the environmental monitors gave talks on how to reduce the carbon footprint, how to increase the diversity of the natural environment or combat erosion. Later, they explained the various properties of the species that the students planted and the traditional uses they have received, largely forgotten by the local population.

In the afternoon, it was the turn of the children of María Asunta School and Muntori School. Between the two they added 91 students, also of fifth and sixth grade, in the school activity focused on caring for the environment. In this case, the students received a commemorative diploma.

On Saturday morning, more than 450 people went to the mountain area next to the Castalla Animal Shelter to get involved in the plantation. The day was open to the entire population. Given the proximity of the hostel, it was used to conduct an open house session and publicize the work that this entity carries out.

The mayor of the Environment of Castalla, Asunción Vera, said that Tree Day “was not celebrated in the town for four years and that it had never been done with this educational approach, with monitors.” In addition, Vera has announced that “more activities of this type are going to be programmed with the objective of raising awareness and sensitizing the population in caring for the environment”.

The Tree Day was celebrated with the participation of Oxytours Environmental Education and the Generalitat Valenciana, which has facilitated the 800 plants of the nurseries of the Ministry of Environment.
