The first interpretative night walk in Castalla, held on 18 July, was a success in terms of participation. The day, organized jointly by the Department of the Environment and the Department of Tourism, brought together 43 people on a 14-kilometer guided route to the well-known Peñas del Litero, included in the protected landscape of the Maigmó and Cid mountains. The Councillor for the Environment, Asunción Vera, explained that “two specialised guides – a mountain guide biologist and an environmentalist, experts in environmental communication from the company Oxytours- accompanied the participants to interpret the environmental heritage and to highlight the ecosystems present with explanations in Spanish and English of the fauna, flora, geology and ethnobotany, as well as to publicise the cultural heritage during the tour”.

The person in charge of the Environment has valued as very positive the participation in the guided route, which has been celebrated for the first time in the town: “The places have been sold out in a short time, people from outside Castalla have signed up, and this allows us to show the uniqueness of our natural spaces and help to preserve the fauna and flora of La Foia”.

The hikers, provided with a mask, clothing and appropriate footwear, have at all times complied with the safety measures to deal with the Coronavirus (Covid-19). This is a regulation that they had to accept when registering for this proposal from the Castalla Town Hall to bring their environmental heritage closer to the residents and visitors to the area.

Castalla has an area of almost 115 km², making it the ninth largest municipality in the province of Alicante and providing it with a unique variety of habitats. In this sense, Asunción Vera, has highlighted that “in Castalla we have up to four figures of environmental protection and recognition: the Protected Landscapes of Maigmó and Cid; the Sites of Community Interest (SCI) of Maigmó and the mountains of Foia de Castalla, which are also Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPA); the Microreserves of Flora of the Generalitat Valenciana, in the Ombría del Carrascal, the Replana or l’Alt de les Xemeneies”.

After the good functioning of this first walk, the Council is already working on new dates to repeat the activity. For the time being, another night route will be carried out on August 22nd and a third one will be held in October, but this time during the day. Registration will be compulsory to participate in the next hiking routes in our mountains. For this, when the time comes, you will be duly informed through the municipal communication channels.
