Castalla City Council asks for citizen collaboration to solve the problem of uncontrolled waste dumping

27-February-2020
  • The containers intended only for organic collection are the point where all types of waste are dumped

The City Council has detected points in the municipality where waste is being dumped in an uncontrolled manner. In the area of the River Verde, for example, all types of waste, construction debris, furniture or pruning remains are accumulated in the dumps, which are exclusively for organic waste (RSU). Even highly polluting products have been found. Despite the regular work of waste collection, this situation is becoming a very important problem for public health.

At the confluence of its municipal district, the municipality has 28 points equipped with containers so that residents can dump only Organic Waste (RSU). The urban containers buried and located in the urban area of our city, have differentiated deposits for organic waste, cardboard and plastic. In turn, the containers located on the outskirts of the city are only enabled to deposit organic waste (RSU), for the rest of the spills must go to the town, for deposits of cardboard and plastic.

The mayor of Castalla, Antonio Bernabeu, reminds us that “the uncontrolled dumping of waste is forbidden, the remains of building work or furniture, household appliances, sanitary ware, etc. must be taken to the Ecopark”. He also stated that there is a contract signed with the company FCC (Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas) for the collection of waste containers six days a week, a frequency that is being complied with as certified by the Consistory. To solve the problem that this type of practice causes “the council has had to strengthen the collection service, with a cost of 2,000 euros additional to clean the containers of the outskirts,” said Bernabeu. In addition, in the words of the mayor, the corporation has been forced to “hire private security to watch over the deposit of waste in the containers and locate offenders.

 Escombraries

The Department of Public Cleaning and Waste Collection and the Department of the Environment are asking for the collaboration of citizens in order to avoid bad practices in the dumping of waste. The City Council is committed to environmental education and civic-mindedness of neighbors as a long-term solution to end this irresponsible behavior. Environmental education will serve as learning to reduce spending and will have an impact on a better state of the natural environment.
